If you don't already have one, get one with the brass ring that keeps the screw centered in the barrel. Screw it in and pull it. It will come out easy if the barrel was clean when it was loaded.Then make a cutter along the design of a couple of saw teeth that fit the groove. This can cut the groove deeper and is advanced to the next groove. Then a paper shim is placed under the cutter and the process is repeated till the grooves are deepened to your goal. First shot the nipple shot out into the grass never to be seen again. Took some powder to the forehead, but the glasses saved my eyes.Over time, esp. with heavy use, the brass will kind of "stretch" a bit, loosen up somewhat. The steel costs a bit more, but will last forever if cared for. I saw a brass 1851 in .44 cal. recently (the originals didn't come in .44!) and it looks great. Stabbed in that outline, back cut all the edges, gouged out the middle of the mortice and then flattened the bottom and cleaned up the mortice. The side plate went right in. I think it took me 20 minutes to outline the plate and cut the mortice.
